Hypnosis FAQ

Q.    What is hypnosis good for? How would I know if hypnosis would be right for me?

A.     This is an often-asked question and my usual response is "What isn't it good for?" I am constantly being surprised by the ever-expanding uses for hypnosis. Applications for hypnosis range from Pain Management to Hypnoanesthesia during surgery and dental procedures to Enhancing Self-Esteem to better managing Situational Stress including habitual Fears. I am not a medical doctor, however hypnosis has been approved for use as an anaesthetic my the American Medical Association since 1959. When I do see a client with a medically-related issue, a referral from a medical doctor is always requested before the session commences. Hypnosis has been used by medical professionals in the treatment of Burns, Psychosomatic Conditions, Autoimmune Diseases, Neurological and Sleep Disorders, and Hypnobirthing. Hypnosis has also proven quite effective with Post-Traumatic Stress, Sexual and Relationship Difficulties, Obesity and Eating Challenges as well as Smoking Cessation and other similar habits such as Nailbiting and Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania). Even Students as well as others have benefited from hypnosis for Concentration including Enhancement of Academic and Athletic Performance.

Q.    Are you a psychologist or mental health counselor? How is hypnosis different?

A.     No. While I am trained in various hypnotic techniques, I am neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist. I do not engage in the diagnosis or treatment of medical or mental disease. All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. As a hypnotist, I will help guide you into the hypnotic state and help you use your natural abilities to adjust habits of thought, feeling and behavior.

Q.    How do I know if hypnosis is for me?

A.     It is very easy to get confused with all the medical and psychological jargon out there. A common misconception is that hypnosis is only reserved for those with extreme psychological problems. The truth is, anyone can benefit from hypnosis. For instance, the words "commitment-phobe" is not only another catch-phrase. Fear of intimacy and/or commitment is quite common. To best gauge the degree to which a fear may be affecting you, ask yourself the following:

Q.    I am responsible for a great amount of confidential information in my business.  How do I know that I won't say something while in hypnosis that may compromise that information?

A.     Please know that all information said in a session is confidential. I am Certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and follow all of the ethical guidelines set up within that body. You may view these guidelines at http://www.ngh.net

Q.    I am interested in hypnosis but I worry about what I've heard about being out of control,  doing something foolish and anything else that can occur while under the influence of someone else.  How exactly does this work?

A.  Hypnosis is a state of consent between the hypnotist and the client. Hypnosis can not be achieved without this state of consent.  You are in full control the entire time and will be the one to gauge how deeply you wish to go into this state of relaxation.  You may also come out of it at anytime.   Hypnosis is a completely natural state, there is nothing mystical or other-worldly about it.

Q. I'm interested but scared.  What's the worst thing that that could occur while under hypnosis?

A.     Physiologically, the mind goes into a state of hypnosis by itself every ninety minutes.  All the hypnotist  does is act as a guide and aid you to achieve a deeper state of relaxation for a longer period of time.  The worst thing that could happen during a session is that you may become so relaxed that you would fall asleep.  And how bad is that?

Q. This is all very interesting, but how is this applicable to me?

A. I am often asked how hypnosis may apply to a particular individual's circumstances. Below are a series of common scenarios in which hypnosis is often quite helpful:

Q.  I had a bad breakup with a man/woman and can't move on. Can hypnosis help me?

A.  Yes. Hypnosis is quite helpful in coping with loss, separation and grief.

Q. I have no motivation and feel like I'm in a 'rut' but I want more from my life. Can hypnosis help me?

A.  Yes. Lack of motivation can be the result of any number of things. Hypnosis is often the best and fastest method of determining what is at its root.

Q.  I want a better relationship with my wife/husband/lover. Can hypnosis help me better communicate in my relationship? Can it help me with intimacy issues?

A.  Yes to both. Both relationship and intimacy issues often have their root in the subconscious.

Q.  I have a lot of baggage in my life from past traumas in my life ['trauma' being defined as any event, emotional or physical, which leaves a deep and lasting effect on your life]. I'm tired of carrying this weight around with me. Can hypnosis help?

A.  Yes. So-called 'baggage' is often easily unpacked in the hypnotic state. Once exorcised and brought up from the subconscious, past traumas often lose their powerful hold over an individual.

Q.  What if I don't have a problem or a specific 'issue' I need to work on? What if I just don't know what I want? Can hypnosis help me?

A.  Yes. I provide both hypnosis and Life Coaching sessions. Hypnosis can indeed help clarify one's innermost desires by allowing what resides in the subconscious to rise to the surface. Oftentimes in scenarios such as this, a combination of hypnosis and Life Coaching sessions may be especially effective.

Q.  I've heard that NLP could help me. But what is it exaclty?

A.  NLP or Neuro-Linguisitic Programming has been called the science of human change or the study of human excellence. NLP is a user oriented metaphor designed to generate behavioral options quickly and effectively. NLP is the study of the subjective experience. To date, it has been extemely effective across all fields --- from the salesman increasing his sales to the individual who simply wants to make a better presentation at a job interview or on a date.
